The striking thing about this video is that we have the government of the Bulgarian nation-state planning to organize a national referendum to stop the short newscast in Turkish language of the national television of Bulgaria. Simultaneously, the same government searches for policies to integrate and even assimilate Turkish speaking population, while it refuses to recognize officially the existence of minority groups inside the Bulgarian borders and projects the Bulgarian nation as a homogenous one. In fact, these policies can only be realized through approach that is via communication, which would definitely fail in case the “interlocutors” do not share the same linguistic tools. Otherwise, lack of communication would only bring segregation along with negative feelings towards the Bulgarian state and a strengthened individual ethnic minority identity diversified from or even opposed to the Bulgarian one. So, either using TV as a mediator to come closer to marginalized populations or any other means to approach them, one thing is for sure: drawing further dividing lines would substantially create more obstacles and problems at the expense of the Bulgarian national interests and nothing more beyond that.
